The Power of Money

In those times when women wore corselettes and crinoline-supported wide skirts and men wore fustanella or kilts, it’s not Barack Obama who makes the world go round-it’s love, the alleged principal force behind human life.

But…

In these times when women wear low-waist skinny jeans and men wear drainpiped jeans, it’s not love that makes the world go round-it’s Bill. May be Bill Clinton… it’s the piece of paper with unimaginable value. You got it right honey, money keeps the 21st century on the go.

In the busy and fast-paced streets of life, you need fuel to be on track. What better fuel exists more than money?

An egg omelet from Manila Peninsula costs Php0000.00-that breakfast is for the limited people with unlimited cash, people who are financially magna cum laude. A cheeseburger from McDonald’s costs Php000.00-for the limited people with limited cash, people who are financially challenged. And a bag of hot pan de sal costs Php00.00-for the unlimited people with limited cash, people who are financially flunking.

That’s just breakfast.

A tee from Guess is worth Php0000.00; a pair of jeans from Levi’s is worth Php0000.00 and a pair of flip flops from Ipanema is worth Php0000.00-this get-up is for the fashionable people living a fashionable life. A tee from Jag is worth Php000.00; a pair of jeans from Bench is worth Php000.00 and a pair of flip flops from Havaianas is worth Php000.00-for the fashionable people living a moderately fashionable life. A tee from a buy-one-take-one-sale in Baclaran is worth Php000.00; a pair of jeans from Divisoria is worth Php000.00 and a pair of flip flops from the market in Zapote is worth Php00.00-for the unfashionable people living an unfashionable life.

There’s more.

A coffee in Starbucks is Php000.00. A coffee in Dunkin Donuts is Php00.00. A coffee from Manang selling along the longevity of San Marcelino Street is Php00.00.

You need money to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, if lucky. You need money to pay the electricity, water, telephone, internet bills. You need money to get your hair, fingernails and toenails done. You need money to attend school, seminars and workshops. You need money to save any one of your family who’s sick. You need money to date your special someone. You need money to lease a place for you to stay. You need money to live.

Traditional, it is that money lengthens life; contemporary, it is that money curtails life. People commit murder for money. People kill people for money. People cheat on people for money. People deceive people for money. People thieve the people’s money. People lie for money. People tilt verdicts for money. People blindfold justice for money. People elect people for money. People and money? What a mortifying combination!

The power of money. One moment you’re buying a pair of espadrilles from Zara and the next moment you’re stealing money from your classmate to a buy another pair espadrilles. Money can make you much like an angel and the next thing you know you’re a devil in an angel’s wings.

No matter how evident it is that money manipulates the country I love and live in, it is not fair for all the Filipinos to just concede in Hobbe’s theory of a man in the state of nature living a solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short life. It is but considerable to adopt Locke’s perception of man-innately good. It wouldn’t hurt to view ourselves and the other people out there as good men. We are all born with goodness inside.

As pushy it is to eradicate Hobbe’s theory about men in the state of nature, is thrice as pushy to believe that money, after all does not make the world go round. Cheesy and mushy as it sounds, it is still more appealing to live in a world move by the unexplainable principal force behind human life-love.
